If you’re looking for a sun-drenched Mexican getaway that perfectly blends excitement and relaxation, you’ve got to put Cabo San Lucas at the top of your list! This energetic resort town, located on the tip of Baja California, is a true playground for adventure-seekers and beach bums alike. Where to Stay and Play To be in the heart of the action, I recommend staying at one of the lively hotels and resorts lining the world-famous El Medano Beach.
GETTING THERE:
Arriving at Los Cabos International Airport Los Cabos International Airport (SJD) is a relatively small but efficient airport that services the two towns of Cabo San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo. After arriving, be prepared for a fair bit of foot traffic as you make your way through the terminal.
Major Airlines Flying Into SJD SJD offers plenty of non-stop flight options from major U.S. airport hubs on most major carriers:
- American Airlines (Dallas, Phoenix, Los Angeles, Chicago)
- United Airlines (Houston, Denver, San Francisco, Chicago)
- Delta (Atlanta, Salt Lake City, Los Angeles, Seattle)
- Alaska Airlines (Seattle, Portland, San Diego)
- Southwest (Denver, Houston, Oakland, San Jose)
There are also seasonal flights from cities like Minneapolis, Boston, and New York on Sun Country, JetBlue, and others.
For international arrivals, there are non-stop flights from several Canadian cities on Air Canada and WestJet. SJD also offers connectivity from other Mexican destinations like Mexico City on Aeromexico and Volaris.
Airport and Ground Transportation Tips:
Helpful insider tips for navigating the Cabo airport and ground transportation:
Ground Transportation Options One of the easiest options is to pre-book an airport transfer through your hotel or a private transportation company. This ensures you have a trusty driver awaiting your arrival without the hassle of negotiating rates. Shuttles typically run between $25-$40 each way.
If going the taxi route, ignore any solicitors before reaching the official taxi stand and transportation desks just outside the arrivals area. There are set rates posted based on your destination. For example, a cab to Cabo San Lucas is around $35-$45. Make sure they run the meter as well.
Local Tip: US dollars are accepted everywhere, so no need to frantically exchange cash right away!
For maximum ease, many visitors opt for a rental car, with companies like Hertz and Budget situated across from the terminal. Just be prepared for some slightly aggressive timeshare promoters working the rental car areas.
Getting Around Cabo Once settled at your hotel or resort, there are safe public transportation options like the modern buses or Uber. Golf cart taxis are also an affordable way to bop around the relatively compact towns. Your resort can also help arrange private drivers or activities outings picked up directly from the lobby.
The key in Cabo is to avoid any overly persistent solicitors, only take authorized transportation, and let your travel insiders (like me!) provide all the best tips! Buen viaje!
More About Cabo
Spots like Riu Santa Fe and ME Cabo have a vibrant, party-meets-paradise atmosphere. Wake up to the sights of funky beach bars, unicorn floats bobbing in the waves, and spirited mariachi performers serenading guests. For a more tranquil home base, consider the resort corridor further east in areas like the Cabo del Sol golf community. You’ll enjoy access to pristine stretches of sandy coastline and incredible outdoor activities like sportfishing, scuba diving, and whale watching.
Memorable Moments One of the most memorable Cabo experiences is swimming with dolphins at Cabo Dolphins. This incredible eco-adventure lets you interact with these majestic animals up close through special encounters and even invigorating swim adventures! Prepare to be amazed as sleek dolphin fins slice through the water beside you. Adrenaline rushes of a different kind await at sun-drenched desert outposts like Wild Canyon.
Thrilling Adventures: Gear up and careen down jaw-dropping rock formations on heart-pounding rappels, or strap into a touring zip line for an eagle’s eye view of stunning canyon landscapes. Sip, Savor and Relax After an action-packed day, there’s nothing better than winding down at a seaside restaurant with an icy margarita in hand. For the best farm-to-table Baja-Med cuisine, locals rave about spots like Acre tucked in San Jose del Cabo. Dig into fresh seafood dishes like zesty aguachile while watching a fiery desert sunset. Those are just a few of my top tips for making amazing memories in Cabo San Lucas! What started as a spring break getaway years ago has turned into one of my all-time favorite travel spots – a vibrant beach escape where adventure and relaxation meet.
If you are looking for cruises of fishing trips, Cabo has many activities you can book such as sunset cruises and fishing charters. There are numerous fantastic restaurants and pubs along the Marina.
Lowkey but Fun:
If you want somewhere more lowkey casual and just somewhere to enjoy the beach, pool, and views, anywhere along the tourist corridor is a fantastic choice, but here are some options. If you want an all-inclusive and to be in the middle of all the action, breathless is the standout. The resort here is for adults only and overlooks Mido Beach. There are DJ pool parties and sunset rooftop live music. If you want a resort where you can relax and unwind but still want to party like you’re on spring break occasionally, the Ryu Palace is a terrific choice. An approximately 15-minute stroll down the beach to downtown Marina Fiesta is a good option for budget-conscious people.
